Structured Interviewing Analysis There are many different interviewing processes that companies use to determine who qualifies as a good candidate for their organization. Interviewers must be knowledgeable in their career and prepare a unique set of predetermined questions that appertain to what the company is looking for in future employees. In a thorough search about structured interviews, also known as a â€Å"standardized† interview, several components and coding words attracted more attention than orders. Those questions should hold priority over more relaxed questions pertaining to the individual. When I was 18 year old, I applied to work at an assisted living facility called, Crestwood Senior living (currently known as Matthews of Glendale). When I first got hired, I was introduced to all the staff and all the residents as well. After being employed there for a while I started to notice that some resident were acting different from the first time I had met them and I did not understand why. So I asked my coworker, why some of the residents were acting different and she explained to me that some of the resident have dementia. Now, at that time I didn’t really know what dementia was because I had never worked in that type of field before or have taking any classes on that type of disease. The Journal was published to a famous magazine. Dominiques mother, Ellen, founded a victims rights group following the trial, Justice for Homicide Victims. In lieu of the murder California adapted a three strikes law, which states habitual offenders will receive harsher sentences for each crime they commit. Sunny von Bulow was given a lethal dose of insulin, which resulted in poisoning and overdose. Her husband Claus was first convicted of the crime, but it was verturned and then he was found not guilty. Sunny remained in a coma for twenty eight years before she passed. Her children, Ala and Alexander were Sunnys biggest advocates. They filed a civil suit against their father and eventually reached a settlement outside of court. Later they created a foundation called Sunny von Bulow National Victim Advocacy Center, which later turned, into, National Center for Victims of Crime. This foundation focused on ensuring that victims of crimes could not be re- victimized. This program was fundamentally started to give victims a voice in the riminal Justice system, and more importantly give them a voice in the case that they were a victim of. Jeanne Clery headed off to college at Lehigh University to start her freshman year at age nineteen. In 1986 she was brutally assaulted and then murdered in her dorm room. At first the university tried to down play the crime and release very little information to the rest of the university and in fact her parents. This is where the The Jeanne Clery Act was so that universities were required to release information to the pubic and the universities. It also increased security policies within the university to protect individuals more. The assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan was the shot heard around the world. The infamous John Hickley Jr. tried to kill the president; he was considered to be extremely mentally ill and was even given the not guilty by reason of insanity conviction. James Brady the press secretary was among those shot that day. He used his almost near-death attempt into working towards restrictions on gun availability. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act were both founded upon Bradys belief that there should be more strict regulations taken for gun control. Carolyn McCarthy was originally working as a practicing nurse. In 1993 and husband and child were the victims of an armed assailant on a commuter train way. Unfortunately her husband, Dennis, was shot to death and her son Kevin suffered extreme injuries, but lived. She took her experience to the White House. Her campaign was to advocate for more gun control and her efforts landed her on the House of Representatives where she was able to work hard to pass her campaign. This social workers whose Job it was to work with those who are troubled found herself to live through something quite troubling. Her young son was shot many times and killed by a street gang. He was not a target of anything; it was Just a senseless brutal killing. This social worker then devoted her life to helping those troubled children, many like those who killed her son. She believed that if these children had an outlet, and someone who cared for them perhaps their lives would be different. In 1994, seven-year-old Megan Kanka was brutally raped and murdered lust Teet Trom ner nouse. Megan was raped ana Klllea Dy a convlctea sex offender. Due to the overwhelming community rage based on this crime this sparked a otification law. The law was fondly referred to as, Megans Law. This law would notify people in the neighbor of sex offenders residing in the area. This made it a requirement for every sex offender to register himself or herself, and for the public to have knowledge of their personal information and their crimes. Lisa Hullinger was brutally murdered by her boyfriend in 1978. Her parents, Bob and Charlotte turned to their local priest for answers. He was able to put them in touch with other families whose children had been murdered. This is where the Parents of Murdered Children was founded. This group goes throughout the United States and some portions of other countries. The group is used so parents can get together, tell their stories, and grieve together while supporting one another. A young woman was brutally murdered, her parents searched for answers not only for her but also for other victims. Her parents got together to form a group of people who are not only advocates but also the victims of these brutal crimes. The point of the group was surrounded on the victim, to make sure their rights are recognized. They also focus greatly on crime prevention. They are most known for their slogan, of the victims, by he victims, and for the victims. In 1975, a non-profit group, National Organization for Victim Assistance, or Nova, was founded. This group is one of the longest standing victim advocacy groups in the United States. The purpose of the group is not only to help people understand why crimes they are a victim of, but to give them resources, and tools in order to cope with these cries. Nova also offers a crisis response team option. This is to ai d people who are victims in a sudden situation and get them the adequate help that they need. HAWC, Healing Abuse working for change, was more ommonly known before as Home for Abused Women and Children. This is an organization that is founded out of the North Shore of Massachusetts. It gives aid, services, and relief to all of those who are suffering from domestic abuse. When it was first founded women were commonly thought of the only ones who were abused domestically, but it can be women, men, and children. This group can provide shelter, food, clothing, and even medical care for those who find their home or domestic life is no longer safe due to violence. There are many groups known worldwide, many in the United States and many abroad.

The Role of the Geisha in Japanese Culture Japan, located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Asian Continent, is a nation composed of almost 7,000 islands, many are small. The four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Japan has the seventh largest population in the world. With approximately 125 million inhabitants, the only countries with a higher population are China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil. The population which is about half of the United States, lives on only 1/25 as much total land mass, this computes to being one of the highest population densities in the world. These conditions reflect in the Japanese cultural values and their desire for being a collective society.1 The Japanese style of conducting business differs greatly from the western model. It has grown out of the nation's unique history cultured philosophy. The Japanese people are isolated in an island nation's unique history, culture, and philosophy. The island nation is under constant bombardment by the harsh forces of nature, have traditionally placed a strong emphasis on working together as a group in order to survive. Their culture is deeply influenced by Confucianism, with its rigid rules governing conduct and its emphasis on trust, consensus, and hierarchy. These ancient roots have influenced every aspect of Japanese business; from the way formal meetings are conducted to the importance placed on after-hours socializing. It has shaped a business culture in which long-term, mutually beneficial relationships are of paramount importance. By understanding and adapting to this business culture, Western executives eager to do business in Japan will be able to be enlightened to be more productive associations with their Japanese colleagues and will increase the probability of achieving the goals of their meetings there. It is important to understand the role of the female entertainer in Japanese culture. That is why the Geisha has a specific role.2 The geisha is described as a ?century old professional entertainer? the geisha is an important part of traditional Japanese social life. Geisha are masters in the arts, trained in music, calligraphy, Sado (tea ceremony) poetry, conversation and social graces as well as three stringed instruments called Shamisen. They dress in traditional kimonos, stunning in their elegance. Basic wooden geta clogs are worn for footwear, and hair is up in bun type coiffures trimmed with metallic accessories. Geisha literally translated means ?beauty person? or ?person who lives by the arts.?3 The geisha emerged around the mid-Edo period (1600- 1868). The first geisha appeared at parties in the 1600's. Surprisingly, they were men. Beating drums and making jokes, they entertained the guests and warriors. As time passed this type of entertaining became a female occupation. By the 1780's female geisha out numbered men and inspired artists, writers, and musicians with their majestic lives in the flower and willow setting. From the end of the Edo period to the present geisha have had connections with businessmen and even with government officials. They were not only revered in Japan, but also fascinated most of western culture. Their fees are rather exorbitantly expensive so they are primarily reserved for the elite. Instead of being calculated by the hour it is referred to in units of sticks, since the fee was formally figured by the lengths of time it took a stick of incense to burn down. One hour generally consists of ?four sticks,? which is the minimum amount of payment.4 Most people hear about Geisha and believe that they are all prostitutes. Geisha is an art.5 The geisha is not a prostitute, but an entertainer trying to make a living.6 The mystic geisha, at one time admired for purity in keeping with men, is inevitably still a source of desire.7A Geisha is a high-class professional who exists on the same continuum as a prostitute. These women who become geisha's not out of love but because opportunity affords them this life. Men hire women to entertain them, and the principal role of a geisha is to provide female companionship. At times that entails just being arm candy, and unfortunately at other times it also involves sex.8 These women are professional hostesses in a variation. Every person, regardless on statute, age, race, or gender, is in search for that one true thing that could make them fulfilled. Peoples definition of happiness varies and the path to achieving that is not at all easy. Life is a series of learning and relearning. And each of us is looking for the path to wisdom to achieve the one true end of happiness. There were people who came before us who gave their ideas on how to make life more manageable. Their lives have ended yet they continue into our own lives through their contributions. I call them the timeless people. And two of the most outstanding thinkers who ever lived were Henry David Thoreau and Plato. Before discussing the contributions of these two distinguished men, it is also important to look into their background and the milieu into which they were born. It was on July 12, 1817 when Thoreau was born in the town of Concord, Massachusetts. In1837, he graduated from Harvard College. He was a former schoolteacher and also made a living chiefly by surveying land and helping with the family pencil-making and ground lead business. Not only that, he also lectured from time to time from 1838 until 1860. He had his own dose of travels and he took time to document them. He died at the age of 44 on May 6, 1862. He never married and he only stayed in his cabin for most of his life. Plato lived way before Thoreau. This Athenian philosopher was born around 428-7 B.C. and died at the age of eighty or eighty-one at 348-7 B.C. He was born into a rich and politically-active family. He was educated by Socrates and was Aristotles mentor. Plato also joined the military service during the Peloponnesian war. He then pursued his political career because he felt more called for that profession. He established the Academy, a school in Athens, Greece. He was one of the philosophers who touched everything: from mathematics, to love, to equality, society and the like. On of his most famous works was Res Republica or The Republic. Thoreau was an utmost individualist and he championed the human spirit against avariciousness and social conformity. He urged others to be simple in their circumstances because that was the key, as seen in his own life, to an astonishing intellectual and spiritual wealth. It was in a plain kind of living that could make one reflect on different things and therefore, have better views of life. I went to the woods, he wrote, because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. He recommended to others to organize life in such a way that the simple and basic things do not get lost within complexities. His thoughts on individualism, materialism, and transcendentalism were the most influential and taught society on how to have a better grasp of things that exist. The Transcendentalists perceived the universe as divided into two fundamental parts, the soul and nature. It was through a definition of nature that Emerson defined the soul: all that is separate from us, all which Philosophy distinguishes as the NOT ME, that is, both nature and art, all other men and my own body, must be ranked under this name, NATURE. The dependability of the human conscience was an essential Transcendentalist principle, and this belief was rooted upon a conviction of the existence or the innate presence of God in the soul of the individual. God is within each one of us. His view on materialism revolved around the premise that one must look into what was necessary to his survival and just live with that. One must not measure ones worth by the things and properties he owned. In fact, he stated in Walden, one of his most well-known crafts, that †¦a man is rich in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone (Walden, 82). He also stated that Most of the luxuries, and many of the so called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind (Walden, 14). Platos Res Republica was often associated with the word utopia since the suggestion he laid down to achieve happiness in the society was all but abstract and very hard to attain. Unlike Thoreaus claims which were based on his own experience, his was still more of a fragment of the mind. Plato said that the ones who should rule should be devoid of the concept of family to avoid injustices. They should also live like soldiers in a camp making do with scarce resources. And he said that these people he was referring to were the philosopher-kings. Plato also discussed the division of labor and specialization in the society. For him, one should only be a master of one craft. Only people with philosophical temperament, according to Plato, are competent to judge between what is real and what seems to be, between the disguising, impermanent appearances of sensible objects and the the permanent reality of unchanging, abstract form. He also supposed that it was through rigorous education where one can achieve what he proposed as the ideal nature of man and the state. While Thoreau viewed man as individualistic, Plato thought And even in the smallest manner [one] should stand under leadership. For example, he should get up, or move, or wash, or take his meals only if he has been told to do so. In a word, he should teach his soul, by long habit, never to dream of acting independently There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands (The Republic).Both had opposing views on how man should act. While Thoreau thought that of civil disobedience, trancendentalism, and pro-individualism, Plato believed in civil obedience, anti-individualism, and the presence of many gods. Both agreed on anti-materialism. But, for me, Thoreaus suppositions are more favorable because they were based from experience. They were not only thought of, they were lived. And in life, it is experience that teaches us more rather than the formal schooling. In the four corners of the classroom, we do learn a lot of things but the outside world is a much bigger world and thus, have more things to reveal to us. It was claimed that on grounds of bad reputation of Christopher Columbus, the Native Americans do not acknowledge and celebrate the Columbus Day. Only the Natives are familiar with the real story of Christopher Columbus and how he played a role in persecuting and elimi nating millions of native people. This real story is masked and decorated with fake embellishments to mislead people and make them believe in the nobleness of whites. This tradition of eliminating the voice of the Natives has survived over the years despite changing times. The presentation was delivered in an attempt to get the voice of the Natives registered and spread awareness about reality. When Christopher Columbus first landed in America, he encountered the Natives. He wrongly began to call them Indians like other Spanish people.
